This Egg in a Hole recipe is a quick, easy and healthy egg-based breakfast, sure to please your little (and big) students, as they scurry off to school.
I don’t know about you, but morning time can be hectic.
From cooking breakfast to making lunches, I am always looking for a simple, quick breakfast.
A healthy egg breakfast will wake the body, stimulate the brain, and satisfy your little one until lunchtime.

One of the things I hear from parents is the request for breakfast ideas.
They run out of ideas.
Or, their kids get bored.
Or, they’re concerned there isn’t enough variety in the day, beginning with breakfast.
I’ve created several recipes and ideas to help you tackle the breakfast rut.

Toad in a Hole vs. Egg in a Basket?
There are many names this delicious egg breakfast can go by: Toad in a Hole, Egg in a Basket, Egg in a Frame, and so on.
We’ve always called it Egg-in-a-Hole!
I’m pretty sure no matter what you call it, the ingredients and apprach to making it are similar if not the same.
This protein-packed, fiber-filled breakfast is something Is love and make regularly.
Why? It’s fast and easy.
The fiber comes from whole wheat bread.
The majority of the protein comes from the egg (there’s a little bit in the bread, too.)
Once cooked, this Egg In a Hole recipe offers a little round, crispy circle that my kids use to dip into the egg yolk.
It’s delicious all by itself, too.

Meanwhile, here’s the Egg in a Hole Recipe:
- 1 slice of whole wheat bread (I use my own homemade whole wheat bread)
- 1 egg
- cooking spray
- salt and pepper, to taste
- a glass
Take the glass and press a circle into the bread; remove the circle and reserve.
Spray a griddle or pan with cooking spray and place the bread on the hot griddle (in lieu of cooking spray, you may use olive oil or butter).
Crack an egg into the "hole" and cook on medium heat, flipping mid-way to assure cooking on both sides.
Simultaneously, place the circle on the hot griddle, and cook until browned on both sides.
We like our egg yolk runny, but if you like yours solid, just cook it a bit longer.
