The Hidden Ways Parents Shame Kids About Food (And How to Stop)

Do you ever worry that something you’ve said about food might stick with your child longer than you intended?

In this episode, I’m talking about the subtle, often well-meaning ways we as parents can unintentionally create shame around food, eating, and body image. These aren’t the obvious moments like yelling or criticism. More often, they’re the small, everyday comments and habits that quietly shape how our kids feel about food and themselves.

I walk you through what food shame actually looks like, why it happens, and how you can shift toward a more supportive, trust-based approach that helps your child build a healthy relationship with food.

Food shame isn’t always obvious. In fact, it often shows up in ways that feel normal, such as commenting on how much your child is eating, praising them for eating less, labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” or comparing siblings’ eating habits or bodies.

In this episode, I break down why so many of us fall into these patterns without realizing it. Diet culture, social pressure, fear about weight or health, and even our own experiences growing up all play a role in shaping how we approach feeding our kids.

I also talk about how these patterns can impact children over time, from disrupting their hunger and fullness cues to increasing anxiety around food, affecting their body image, and even shaping their self-esteem.

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • What “food shame” really looks like (and why it’s often subtle)
